The big 4 suck

Postby Dyvan13 on Wed Jul 28, 2010 8:45 pm

Don't you strongly disagree with that statement? I sure do.

There, now that I've got your attention, I have a ticket to see the big four minus Metallica at the Pearl at the Palms, but it's a seating ticket right behind general admission, but not general admission itself.

I'd MUCH rather go in general admission and attempt to start some circle pits, so I was wondering if any ohter members here were in a similar predicament. Do you guys think security would care? I could wait awhile before ditching my seat for GA, or should I dress in black and sneak my way up there lol?

Thx in advance

I saw two of the big four two days ago. Megadeth and Slayer. Megadeth were awesome. Slayer are a bit too heavy for me. Chris Broderick was pretty incredible. Great guy too!

For some reason the pictures are cut off on the sides, oh well, you get the idea.

What I find interesting about Chris Broderick is his live rig. He is using Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultras set to the ENGL PowerBall amp simulator. It's good to see this technology getting some legitimate high-profile artist usage.

Okay, I'll translate

Even though it is 2010 we still live in a world where rock guitarists prefer good old-fashioned tube amps. In fact, if you go to the Marshall Amp forums (among others, I'm sure) you will find a community so entrenched in tube technology that prying their minds open wide enough to slip in a new idea or two is virtually impossible. Not only have digital amp simulation products like the POD left them believing that the very idea is fundamentally flawed, but they positively sneer at the notion that amp modelers would ever be used by "real musicians".

As it happens, the state of the art in digital amp modeling is not the POD, nor any DigiTech product, but a device called the Axe-FX by a company called Fractal Audio. It is to the POD what the space shuttle is to a LearJet. Chris Broderick is one fellow who has switched over from using tube amps to using the Axe-FX Ultra for his live rig. He has one of his units (I believe he uses a pair of them) set to simulate an ENGL PowerBall tube amplifier. He then adds virtual effects pedals by dragging and dropping them into place using a connected laptop.

Hopefully that made more sense.

I should clarify that Broderick uses the Axe-FX as a replacement for the pre-amp section of his old tube heads. He still feeds the simulated signal to a tube-based power section.

Thanks John for taking the time out to explain this technology/gear, so after an extra bit of research I have come to learn something else today also - that Chris is also an excellent classical guitarist - enjoy!!!

maybe some of this should be in the equipment pages but I recently purchased a champion 600 it blows everything away for tube amp tone. and I got it for $129-50 dollar coupon = $79!!!! Once you play on that I understand the geeks that will only play the tube amps. the legend or the hype is that a lot of famous artists use it miked up to record etc.,.,.

Thanks Jon and Sarah.

As far as the AxeFX thingamabob. I saw Dweezil Zappa a few weeks ago and he was using one. It sounded very good, but I could tell that it was not a regular guitar amp. I understand why he would use one. It's very convenient and consistent. He also needs a wide variety of sounds for Zappa's music. He could play through a pocket pod and still sound awesome though. :D
