I highly recommend it for everyone, even if it's playing in a local bar or dive. When people applaud for you it is incredibly satisfying.

A few of the people I knew were entered into the contest and shortly before the event the guitarist had an accident... They asked if I would step in... I had no more than FOUR days to get up to speed!We didn't win but I did end up getting an "honorable" mention...something they've never done before. (Or since to my knowledge.)
The point is... Even if nobody is hosting an event like that, it may be worth your while to suggest it... Who knows, they might just go for it. And regardless of the outcome it can be a lot of fun!
