Back when I was in college a friend learned to play via the cassettes. He played guitar and I played bass in a short-lived band. Fast forward ten years when I finally get a guitar. I remembered the name Metal Method and did a little Googling. The rest, as they say, is history. I'm 40 and will soon begin teaching my 10 year old to play.

As an aside, I heard my nine year old trying to bang out "Smoke on the Water" on the piano after hearing it on the radio. Makes a Dad proud :)

Doug Marks wrote:I started Metal Method 26 years ago. At the time, most of my students were younger, teens and twenty somethings. The lessons were really popular in the 80's. Some people considered ordering the lessons then and never got around to it. Others put their guitar aside for a few years and began playing again recently. In a nutshell, I think the name recognition from the 80's has attracted people that were aware of the lessons back then.

That's why I ordered them... When I got back into playing I picked up a few magazines...and saw the ads. "Wow, those are still around, there must be something to them." As I had wanted them way back when but never got around to ordering them I figured what the heck.

Besides, ordering online is soooo much easier than writing a check...then finding an envelope....then searching for a stamp. Bleh. That probably explains why I still write so few checks...maybe one a month...

I am 40.

I saw all the ads in the magazines back then. I was aware of the course.

One day I was in a music store just looking at the guitars. Some guy was in there trying out some guitars. He was plugged in and picking some Dokken riffs. He sounded really good, and I was a huge Lynch fan. I asked him how he learned to play like that and he replied that he was doing the Metal Method course. That is when I figured the course must be for real. It was years later when I got around to buying a guitar and the complete course, but when it was time to learn to play....I remembered Metal Method because of the ads in the magazines and the guy jamming in the music store. I googled Metal Method and within minutes I was pulling out my credit card and placing my order. I bought the older course, and within a year or so, Doug came out with the new course and so I bought that too. I have yet to buy any of the MAB Speed Kills videos.

I'm not sure if the average age of forum members is the same as the average age of people studying the course. My guess is, the forum is representative of students and past students of my course.

I'm sending out a newsletter today and will mention the two polls to get some more participation.

Right now, more than 50% of forum members are between 36 and 45 which would put the median age at 40. Interesting.

43 here. I tried learning guitar on my own, and with two different teachers during a two year span in the early 90s. The internet was just getting going and I found the old Metal Method forum. Then I ordered the complete VCR course either by snail-mail, or by calling the phone number (I can't remember for sure..). That was about '96.

After two years of getting frustrated, I learned to play pretty well, from the videos, in six months. I don't play much anymore due to other things taking priority. And when anyone asks what the best way to learn to play is, I always tell them Metal Method is the best.

Thanks Doug, for being a great instructor and businessman.

I'm 37....been playing far longer than I care to admit

I have teenage daughters...I chid them and their friends that I have guitars older than they are

I think one reason that there seems to be a higher percentage of "older" members or people using the materials is that we, as a general rule, are more secure in our lives, lifestyle, financial, and free-time than some of the younger members. We're already established to varying degrees..and have some time to dedicate to our hobby/art/craft.

I'm medically retired from the US Marines...there is NO way I could have, or even really did play a lot in my 14 years in...I didn't have time...when I did have the time...I tried to recharge or whatever to regain any semblance of sanity I have or claimed to have. It was brutal..especially with the War on Terror going on...

Anyway...thanks for listening....those are my thoughts and opinions on this.

I'm 50. Tried bass guitar around 15. Had a couple of guitars in my late teens/early twenties. Got various books and one rhythm guitar course on cassette. Bought a B.C. Rich around '87. I still have it. Got Metal Method on video in the '90s. Bought an LTD Viper 301 a few years ago and got the first two dvds of the new version of MM recently. Still plugging away at it.

I´m 41.
Playing Metal forever, time playing since 14 years old on and off.
I´m actually trying to play more often, at least 15 -30 minutes a day.
It really gets the stress out of my system.
I first bought the Metal Metod in 86-87 ( I still have it ) and bought the
VHS edition in 2001, along with the Setup and Songwriting course.
I´m thinking on orgering the DVD´s too real soon.
Great stuff, I don´t get tired of going back to these great lessons, as
a matter of fact I seem to get something new each time a review a lesson
either from the lesson or something that I associate with it, it just keeps
me motivated to keep going and enjoy it even more now than before.

Keep Up the Great Work!

Francisco.
