Stage 6 theory DVD

Postby steelaxe on Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:12 am

Well, spurred on by "discovering" the Locrian minor mode in Stage 5 yesterday, I thought it would be a good time to spin the Stage 6 DVD. The light has come on big time!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have covered loads of music theory over the years, even gotten grade exams, but Doug's guitar related theory DVD is simply the best lesson I have ever had especially with the printed exercises and charts. I have also studied for piano grades in my dim and distant past but never have had modes, chords and progressions explained to me so clearly as Doug does in this DVD. BTW Doug - did I recognise the chord progression on the piano as "let it be"? :)

The section on how to work out tunes was really illuminating. There is a lot of info for guitar players on this DVD, will be a great reference source for a long time to come.

I now look forward to Sarah's new "Harmonic Principles" to explain the dissonant yuckiness of the locrian mode tonic diminished chord.

Thanks for the great post, Mick!
I always loved music theory, but most people aren't very keen on it. I spoke to a friend the other day who said "it was too much like school". Well, I liked school too...

I like school too, I am just a few months from my 2 year degree. I think I am going to just turn around and go for my 4 yr degree. :)

Legal, for paralegal/ legal assistant. Law is a huge and complex field I think I would feel much more confident going into the field with 4 years of study.

My younger brother is a CPA. I vividly recall all of the hours of intense study that he endured to pass the different sections of the test. I also know how he burns the midnight oil during tax season! Good post Mick.
