Sarah: Question for you

New postby crossrhoads on Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:07 pm

I wasn't really sure where to post this but here it is.

I'm curious how you balance your teaching, buisness stuff, material you come up with for your students, your own practice and writing your own music if you are doing that right now.

Between the teaching, business stuff and things I get for my students I don't really get much time for myself. I go back and forth between working on some of my own original material and working on teaching materials. I have a bunch of ideas I would like to do like creating my own courses, doing some instructional material on video etc...

My dilemma is I keep wanting to work on my own playing and creating original music but it then sidelines all the other projects I would like to do. I of course really enjoy working on my own stuff but I don't make any money off of it. Getting a band going right now is just not a possibility. With the instructional stuff I'm helping my own private teaching business and maybe even growing it more as my ideas become reality.

So while one part of me says work on some of your own stuff and enjoy yourself my brain says concentrate on the things that will grow your business!

Do you have any similar experiences as this? If so how do you either deal with it or balance it out?

Hi! That's a great question.
It is tough to get the right balance of everything. I do love teaching, so that counts as "me time"!
On Metal Riffology I really enjoyed creating the music with the drums and bass (intro, titles and outro). I have written even more music for Melodic Principles. There are even several complete solos.
After this project is complete I might turn my focus to making more original music- or I might take a rest and start to work on "Harmonic Principles for Rock Guitar"!

Yea, when I'm working on the instructional stuff I do enjoy it. I keep thinking, as ridicules as it sounds, that I have to get going on writing some music. Although it is something I want to do why really do I have to get it done now? I keep categorizing creating instructional stuff as work although I do enjoy it. I guess I have to be at piece with what I thought when I was younger and come to terms that I'm an instructor now and there is nothing wrong with focusing in on my instructional side more. As long as I'm enjoying it all is good!
