How long will it take to complete metal method Stage 1-6?

New postby Sergei on Fri Aug 21, 2009 5:08 pm

I was wondering how long it will take to complete and master each stage and each lesson of the metal method dvd course. I know you can work at your own pace, but I would like to have an idea of how long it could take. 1 year? 2 years? or less?

Thanks.

It's pretty much up to the individual, and how much work you put into them. The course is very well put together and it's a lot of fun to learn from these great lessons so I would imagine that you'll be pleased by your progress with regular practice sessions. I remember Doug saying a long time ago when I first started these lessons that you'll get out of these lessons just what you put into them.

Following the recommended pace of 30 minutes a day 5 days a week the course should take six momtns as each level is divided into four weekly lessons.

Will it take that long? Depends on you.

Or if you are like me, you start out to do 30 mins and it ends up being all evening  Good thing my wife is very understanding.

You could complete the course in a few months, but you will spend many years mastering what you have learned. It comes down to how much practice you put into it daily, every day, day after day. :) Skipping days here and there is OK, but taking extended 'vacations' would be very detrimental if you are looking at achieving pro level playing. And injuries... those will slow you down for months. Give it a rest if you are feeling pain. Trust me. I cycle out about one month every 6 to 8 months now to give the body a break, and it takes more than a month to get back to the level of playing I was at before vacation/recuperation.

If you practice for two to three hours per day, every day for a year, you will get between 700 and 1000 hours in. At that pace, you would see dramatic improvement in a year, but that can be a bit unrealistic, unless you have all the time in the world, and a very tolerant esposa... wouldn't that be a dream come true- it's usually either/or, but rarely both.

There's a study out there that shows the true masters of practically anything, have put in 10,000 hours of whatever it is they do to reach that level. At this pace, 8 to 10 years to reach that level of mastery. Unless you are talking golf..... that defies all theories and training, except you will always have at least one shot per round that keeps you coming back for more. No matter how miserable the other 95 shots were. I play a helluva lot more guitar than golf these days.

If you dedicate a half hour to an hour per day, you get between 150 and 350 hours in over a year. It would take you 2 to 3 years to see good playing results. Great if you are wanting to learn the guitar, but not trying to pursue anything life changing.

It all boils down to what your goals are, and how you implement your plan to achieve those goals. Practice, practice, practice.

Hanrahan put it very well, but from my limited experience of being in just stage 4 (final bits) and playing a bit of other stuff before using the MM dvds... your question is like "how long will it take me to break dance" :)

Answer: It depends a lot on the person.

Some people are naturally gifted IMHO and will pick up faster than others, other people are more dedicated and wont give up till the master something... and some people wont let go till its identical to whats on the video while other will move on when "its good enough".

Too many factors, but what i can tell you is... the MM is fun and makes you feel good when you have that damn guitar in your hands.
DM and SS have done a wonderful job with the DVDs - well worth it (unsolicited comment) :D

Again IMHO, being able to play your guitar the way you want to is as much fun as you can have with your pants still on, of course taking off your pants and still playing your guitar goes into a whole new area of discussion which i wont get into here.

rofl @ daveotr :D

As ppl above my post mentioned, it differs per person.
Just take every day a little time to practice. It may range from at least 20 mins to 60 mins or more.
Be concentrated and motivated while playing & practicing.
And the most important have fun while doing it.

If you do this, you will be done within 6 months

Peace, Metallic

Also, don't forget you have other resources, not just the videos. I am no pro, actually a noob, but stuff like Fretboard Warrior that was posted on here was extremely helpful in learning the notes. Simple scale and chord books will keep your imagination alive. And nothing is more satisfying than playing your favorite metal song on your own guitar, so getting to know some TABS sites is highly suggested.

I really don't think its the destination its more the journey of discovery and mastery of what you learn.
Any or all of those resources can lead to leaps and bounds in understanding and progression. Which can cut down a lot of time to reaching your goals. It just depends on how completely you "get it". And how much you want it.

It took me several years to get thru it but I also worked with a private teacher, did some online lessons, and did some other dvd's too. I'd say you can get thru the course in 8-10 months if you really focus on it and put in the time. Probably 1 and 1/2 years would be about right tho....to master everything....assuming you are starting as a complete newb.

I loved every minute of the course and often went back and repeated the discs many times over. I actually wore mine out and need to reorder the course again ha ha!

I have been at it since last August and have comfortably made it through to stage 4. I have been reluctant to forward on to stage 5 because I watched it first and decided i better keep working on the previous four stages.

There is so much crammed into the first stages that a complete beginner (like me) has a lot to work on and still keep it fun and interesting. Since I started playing last year I have become a bit of a gear addict though, 5 guitars, a Peavey JSX and custom 4x12 Cab, and this summer a GT-10. So much for just wanting to learn how to play.

I spoke to a couple of students from the 80's last week. Both of them mentioned that they continue to review the videos even after all of these years. So, the goal may be to complete the course in six months but over time you'll find that this is more of a process than a goal.

Thats what i was thinking, I went to the end of 4, the took a break and started learning some songs:
Classical as well as Stairway to heaven / fade to black and really worked on the pentatonic scale
once i get those down to a standard i like, i think i'll review 1-4 again and then move on to 5...
(I also keep hitting Sarah Spisaks DVD, totally recommended to anyone here who has not gotten it.. answers quite a few questions about a lot of songs )
